A Busy Week

Last week was filled with 7:30am meetings, two of which were to continue the discussion of next year's budget. I was impressed with the quality of thought and questions put forward by the Finance Committee. They are a smart and capable group who care deeply about the school, the parents and education of the students.

I met with members of the Music, Art and Drama departments to discuss forming a new group of parents who would enjoy supporting the Arts at GDS. Terri Obermyer led the discussion and it has resulted in the formation of the MAD (Music, Arts and Drama) Society. You should be receiving information in the coming weeks on the role that this group will play in supporting our theatre, music and fine arts programs.

Wednesday night was pretty exciting. Linda and I attended the Duke/Carolina game at Cameron. Attended is too soft a word, actually. It would be more accurate to say that we were swept up in the madness of a rather spectacular event. We enjoyed ourselves immensely and find that participating in such cultural events is deepening our attachment to North Carolina.

Third and Fourth graders dropped by to sell cookies, cupcakes and other sugary items in support of their fund raising efforts. Liz Waters brought her smiling face by and shared some excitement about the continuing success of the Annual Fund. She and Glen have done such a great job this year.

I had a lovely luncheon with the Lower School parent advisory group. It provided an opportunity to meet some terrific volunteers and share thoughts about computers, kids and cell phones in today's culture.

I continue to be impressed with the work that all our division directors accomplish. Hardly a day goes by without them attending an after school event, leading a parent discussion, running a faculty meeting, or working with a teacher.

It's been a great week!
